يعد كتاب "تعليم المتعلم في طريق التعلم" أقدم تراث تربوي صنفه المسلمون "كتاب – العالم والمتعلّم – للإمام أبي حنيفة النعمان المتوفي سنة (150) ورسالته إلى عثمان البتي، ووصيته إلى تلميذه الإمام أبي يوسف في فقه السلوك الإجتماعي للعالم، ونظرات متفرقة في الفقه الأبسط، والفقه الأكبر".
ففي العالم والمتعلم (الذي اتخذ أسلوب الحوار والمناقشة بين المعلم والطالب في قضايا الدين عقيدة، وفقهاً) يضع مؤلفه مواصفات، وشروطاً للعالم والمتعلم. فلا بد أن يعرف :"أن الله عز وجل إنما بعث رسوله رحمة، ليجمع به الفرقة، وليزيد الألفة). وأن عليه أن يفرق بين الدين، والشريعة، فإن (رسل الله لم يكونوا على أديان مختلفة ... وكان كل رسول يدعو إلى شريعة نفسه، وينهى عن شريعة الرسول الذي كان قبله) وبين علاقة الإيمان بالعمل وأهمية الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر ...
يتضمن هذا الكتاب تحقيق للنسخ الخطية الأربع للكتاب الأصلي (تعليم المتعلم) وهي من مخطوطات المكتبة الظاهرية بدمشق، إضافة إلى نسخ مطبوعة كالنسخة المطبوعة في مصر سنة 1301ه عن شرح الشيخ إبراهيم بن إسماعيل.
جاء الكتاب في ثلاثة عشرة فصلاً هي:
فصل: "في ماهية العلم، والفقه، وفضله"، فصل: في النية في حال التعلم،
فصل: "في اختيار العلم، والأستاذ، والشريك، والثبات"، فصل: "في تعظيم العلم، وأهله"، فصل: "في الجد، والمواظبة، والهمة"،
فصل: "في بداية السبق، وقدره، وترتيبه"،
فصل: "في التوكل"،
فصل: "في وقت التحصيل"،
فصل: "في الشفقة، والنصيحة"،
فصل: "في الإستفادة (واقتباس الآداب)،
فصل: "في الورع في حال التعلم"،
فصل: "فيما يورث الحفظ (وفيما يورث) والنسيان"،
فصل: "فيما يجلب الرزق، وما يمنعه، وما يزيد في العمر، وما ينقص".
