يحتل موضوع التعلم مكاناً بارزاً في علم النفس التربوي لما له من دور مهم في العملية التربوية التعليمية. وله أيضاً المكانة الرئيسية في علم النفس العام، فإن كثيراً من العادات وأنماط السلوك والقيم والاتجاهات يمارسها الإنسان بعد تعلّمها من خلال احتكاكه بظروف الحياة العامة. كما أنه من خلال دراسة التعلم تتمكن المؤسسات به التربوية من وضع خطط التوجه السليم لأفرادها لتصل بهم إلى الأهداف الموضوعة لهم.
من هنا تأتي أهمية كتاب الزرنوجي عن طريق التعلم، الذي يعطينا فهمه وتصور عصره للملامح العملية لكيفية تطبيق أسس النظرية الإسلامية التربوية. وهو في عرضه لتلك الملامح يتبنى بعض ما كان معروفاً قبله من الكتب والأبواب والفصول المتخصصة في العلم والتربية، كما يصف الملاحظات المبنية على التجارب الشخصية وخبرة معلميه.
في ثلاثة عشر فصلاً يعرض الزرنوجي تصوره لطريق التعلم، ويرى أن هذا الطريق هو الأسلوب الأمثل لعملية التعلم وأن ما يعرضه هو نصيحة للمتعلمين يجب الأخذ بها وإلا فلن يتمكنوا مما يرغبون به. وتقديراً لأهمية الكتاب وللاستفادة من قيمته التربوية عني الدكتور "مروان قباني" بتذييله بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم من معانيه وما أشكل من ألفاظه، أما عمله في التحقيق فتحلى بـ: أولاً: تصحيح الأخطار الإملائية والإعرابية الواردة بكثرة في النص. ثانياً: عزو الآيات القرآنية بالإشارة إلى السور، ورقم الآية، وتخريج الأحاديث النبوية بالإشارة إلى مصادرها، ودرجة صحة بعضها، وأبيات الشعر برد بعضها إلى قائليها. ثالثاً: ضبط وتصحيح بعض أسماء الأعلام الواردة في النص، وترجم للأعلام بشكل موجز. رابعاً: دوّن بعض التعليقات لردّ الأفكار الواردة إلى الأصل الإسلامي وغير ذلك.
