الماء حياتهم، وآخر ما تبقى لهم من أمل في البقاء... كانوا يعرفون في قراءة أنفسهم أن كذب العوجاء يساوي في هذه القفراء أنفاسهم، ولم يعودوا يحملوا بالبئر، في تلك اللحظات كانت تكفيهم بعض قطرات من الماء.
بحثوا عن السيف! بأيديهم يكشفون ما يستره الرمل عن عيونهم، بحثوا بقلوب خاوية، وعيون مرهقة تفقد قدرتها على التنقل، فتستقر نظراتها وتتصلب فوق الرمل الذي تحركه أيديهم..
لمعت عينا سعد، وتراجع إلى الخلف، تحجرت الكلمات على شفتيه، كان ليث ينظر إليه من بعيد فصاح وهو يجري صوبه: وجدته يا سعد؟ وجدته؟
رفع سعد السيف بكلتا يديه، فتناوله ليث، أزاح عنه الرمال، ثم مسحه بثوبه، نظر إلى السيف غير مصدق، وتعلقت كذلك بالسيف نظرات الفرسان...
لمن هذا السيف المرصع؟ سأل ليث بانبهار! فأجابه يزيد بسؤال آخر: ماذا ستفعل عجوز كالعوجاء بسيف كهذا؟ إنها مجنونة! انتزع ليث السيف من غمده، فأثاره اللمعان، تحسس ذبابته بنشوة، ثم قال وهو يعيده إلى غمد المرصع: هذا السيف لي! صاح يزيد بغضب: أتينا لتنقذ قبيلتنا من الهلاك، لا لتحل عليهم لعنة الصحراء! سنجد البئر! سيدلنا على نفسه ما دمنا نمسك بالسيف...
