يتناول الصحراء ، حدودها ومساحتها وطبيعة تكوينها ، تطرفها المناخي أهم عوامل الجفاف والجدب ، الحياة النباتية والحيوانية والإنسانية في الصحراء ، بعثات الكشف واتفاقات الاستعمار.
وفي أصل تسميتها بالصحراء اختلف الرأي : فمن قائل أنها سميت كذلك لكونها مساحة شاسعة مهجورة ، أو لأنها الأرض الصلبة ، وكلا التسميتين تستجيبان لواقع الحال: لأن الصحراء فعلاً رقعة شاسعة، ولأن "المحارات" التي تشغل الجزء الأكبر من سطحها هضاب صخرية تعلو مستوى الرمال المتحركة المحيطة بها بتسعة أضعاف كما يقولون.
