كان مما سرنى كثيراً أن عهدت وزارة المعارف إلى وإلى زميلى وصديقى الأستاذ الفاضل الدكتور عبد الحليم النجار، الأستاذ بكلية الآداب بجامعة فؤاد الأول، نقل هذا الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية. سرنى هذا العمل، لما أعرف من قمية الكتاب بالنسبة لموضوعة، وبالنسبة لمؤلفة الأستاذ الكبيرة "إميل بريهييه".
أما موضوعه، فهو دراسة "فيلون" الفيلسوف الإسكندري من ناحية آرائه الفلسفية والدينية. ونحن نهرف أن "فيلون" هذا ولد بالاسكندرية نحو عام 20 أو 30 قبل الميلاد، وأنه مات بعد عام 54 من القرن الأول للميلاد، فى زمن الحواريين. وقد كان كبير المنزلة بين أبناء جنسة اليهودي وطائفته.
لقد درس "فيلون" الفلسفة اليونانية، وسائر الفلسفات التى كانت الإسكندرية تموج بها فى عصره، ولعله- كما يروى- كان يعرف الفلاسفة الأجانب أفضل من معرفته لفلاسفة بنى جنسة ودينه.ويعنينا هنا بصفة خاصة، أن نشير إلى أن "فيلون" كآخرين من بعده من مفكرة اليهود، كان يروى ان التوراة فيها أفكار فلسفة لا تقل مكانة وسموا عن خلاصة التفكير الإغريقى، وكل ما يجب للوصول إلى هذه الأفكار هو استخلاصها من نصوص التوراة بطريق التأويل المجازى. وقد تبعه فى هذا الطريق الفيلسوف الأندلسى موسى بن ميمون تلميذ الفيلسوف الأندلسى الاشهر أبي الوليد بن رشد، وإن كان سبينوزا الفيلسوف اليهودي الآخر المعروف، قد لامه على ذلك لوما كبيرا وأما مؤلف هذا الكتاب الضخم القيم، فهو الأستاذ "إميل بريهييه" الحجة العالمى فى الفلسفة وتاريخها فى جميع عصورها: القديمة، والوسيطة، والحديثة بما كتب فى ذلك من المجلدات العديدة المعروفة، والرسائل الكثيرة، التى كل منها حجة فى موضوعها.
