الفرق كبير بين الشعراء الذين تيّمهم حبهم العذري وبين عشق الملوك والخلفاء. فأولئك الشعراء قضوا دون أن يحققوا أحلامهم وأمنياتهم والزواج باللواتي أجبنهن. فقد كان من تقاليد العرب أن لا يزوج الأب ابنته بشاعر تشبّب بها إذ أنه كان يعتبر التغزل بابنته فضيحة. أما حبّ الملوك والخلفاء، وبعضهم شعراء، فكان ميسوراً لهم، الذهب والمال والجواهر والحلل. ولم نسمع عن ملك أو خليفة أصيب بمسّ من شدة هيامه بامرأة أو جارية.
وكان لكل ملك أو خليفة العديد من الجواري. بعض الملوك والخلفاء اشتهر بالملك والخلافة وانهمك بالملذات والشراب بسبب تعلقه بجواريه ضارباً عرض الحائط بمتطلبات شعبه، غير أن البعض الآخر، رغم هيامهم بجواريهم وطّد حكمه واهتم برعاية شعبه. ومن الملوك والخلفاء من لم يكتف بعشق الجواري فراح يعشق الغلمان ويتشبب بهم كالمعتصم والواثق وغيرهما، في حين لم نسمع أن شاعراً عذرياً عشق غلاماً. "خازن عبود" جمع في مؤلفه هذا طوائف من الأخبار ولطائف من أسرار أشهر حكايا العشق التي كان متيموها من الخلفاء والملوك والأمراء والوزراء العشاق.
