هذا الكتاب أين أنتَ حين تكون في الطريق السريعة أو في محطة قطارٍ أو في مطار أو في طائرة، أو في فندق أو في مساحات التجارة الكبيرة أو في مخيّمِ لاجئين؟ أنت في فضاء السرعة والعبور والمؤقّت، أنت لست في مكان وإنّما في "اللاّمكان".
المكان، في معناه الأنثروبولوجي، لا يكون مكاناً إلاّ بما يَنتسِج ويثبت فيه من رموز ومعانٍ، عبر المسارات والعلاقات والأفعال والأحاديث، وما ينبعث فيها من إحتمالات.
كل مكان لا هويّة له ثابتة، لا تُنسَج فيه العلاقاتُ ولا تستمرّ... لا ملامحَ تاريخيّة له، هو واحد من هذه "اللاّأمكنة" التي أنتجتها "الحداثة المفرطة" وجعلتها من سمات هذا العصر.
"الحداثة المفرطة" فَرضت على أشكال الوعي الفردي أن يختبر تجارب جديدة من العزلة ترتبط، مباشرةً، بظهور "اللاّأمكنة" وإنتشارها.
هذه "اللاّأمكنة" هي نقيض السّكن والإقامة: من يرتادها هو، فيها، وحيد ومشابه للآخرين، في الوقت نفسه، لا يمكنه إخفاء هويّته، فهيا، إلاّ بإظهار ما يثبتها (جواز سفر، بطاقة مصرفيّة، إلخ...) هو، معها، في علاقة تعاقدٍ عابر ينتهي بخروجه منها.
إن المؤلّف - وهو أحد أشهر الأنثروبولوجيين المهتمين بالحياة اليوميّة المعاصرة - يفتح، في هذا الكتاب، آفاقاً جديدة لأنثروبولوجيا "الحداثة المفرطة" التي يتوقّع أن توجّه الباحثين إلى دراسة نمطٍ جديد من الفردانية ومن عزلة الإنسان المعاصر.
