يكتب "مارك أوجيه" في مهنة الأنثروبولوجي والتي هي "مهنة دراسة الإنسان الأنثروبوس" فهي برأيه محكوم عليها بأن تكون إنسانية أو لا تكون ويتطرق إلى دراسة العلاقات الاجتماعية من خلال ثلاثة أبعاد للإنسان على الإنسان النوعي الذي يعرّفه بأنه "هو الذي أبدع خلال القرون وآلاف السنين تقنيات جديدة. وهو الذي سار على سطح القمر وهو الذي يحدث أن يرمز اسم علم ومفرد إلى وجوده وكل واحد منا له الحق في أن ينتسب إليه مهما تواضعت منزلته الإنسانية".
أما الرسالة التي يود أوجيه تبليغها في كتابه هذا "إنه ثمة شيء ما من صميم الإنسان ومن نفسيته كان ما يقال وما زال كذلك في التشوش الظاهري للقانون والاتهامات الذي يسم حياة الشعوب غير الأوروبية". وبهذا يكون "أوجيه" يتحدث عن الإنسان النوعي الذي يوحدنا ونتوحد فيه. برأيه مهما اختلفت ثقافاتنا ودياناتنا ولغاتنا. وهو ملكية مشتركة لجميع البشر.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتساءل عن مهنة الأنثروبولوجي ويعني بها التساؤل عن العالم الراهن. "هل ما زال قابلاً إلى أن يُقاضي من وجهة نظر إثنولوجية يتمثل همها في رصد الاختلافات وفهمها؟ وهل أن عملية التنميط التي ستشهدها الكرة الأرضية الآن لا تنزع كل تبرير بل قل، كل مشروعية عن مشروع أكسبه معنى -في خلاصة الأمر- الاستعمار الأوروبي وحده؟
يعتمد "أوجيه" على مكونات الزمن والثقافة والكتابة في موضوعاته وفي نفس الوقت يعتبرها معيقات في علاقتنا بالواقع، فماذا يقصد بذلك؟
الجواب: سوف نقرأه في متن هذا الكتاب والذي هو عبارة عن تحليل نقدي هام للمركزيات الإثنية الثقافية والتي يركز فيها على المعنى الاجتماعي والحرية الشخصية التي تنبثق منها كل أنماط التنظيم الاجتماعي من أكثرها بساطة إلى أكثرها تعقيداً وهذا يعني أن عملاً كثيراً ما يزال في انتظارها.
