كلما أنهيت قراءة فصل من فصول هذا الكتاب كانت قناعتي تزداد بأن إلياس نصرالله قدم عرضاً يمتزج فيه الماضي بالحاضر والمستقبل، مكوّناً زمناً فلسطينياً واحداً… فبالتذكر المتيقظ صوّر إلياس جوانب من ماضي فلسطينيي الداخل والشتات، وبالانتباه ألقى الضوء على مأساتهم المستمرة، وبالتوقّع استشفّ مستقبلاً فلسطينياً محفوفاً بالمخاطر.
ومع أن استعادة أحداث الماضي ووصفها كما حدثت في الواقع هي مهمة مستحيلة، إلا أن قدرة إلياس على السرد والربط بين الأحداث أكسبت بناءه التاريخي تماسكاً مقنعاً.
وسع إلياس المفهوم البسيط للتاريخ، حيث لم يكتف باستحضار ذاكرته الشخصية، وإنما زوّدها بمصادر متعددة ساعدته على إنتاج تاريخ حافل بالأحداث، جعلت منه مؤرخاً "بنفسه ولنفسه ولغيره".
أثبت إلياس أن كتابة التاريخ بأسلوب أدبي لا يؤثر سلباً في منهجيته، مثبتاً بذلك صحة قول أحد المؤرخين بأن من لا يستطيع كتابة قصة، لا يستطيع، أيضا، كتابة التاريخ.
ولأنها مبنية على قصص من حياة الناس، فسردياته غير خاضعة لخطابات النخب الفلسطينية على حساب خطابات الناس العاديين، ما جعلها تساهم في تقويض السرديات الصهيونية الكبرى والصغرى التي حاولت وتحاول الهيمنة على معرفة تاريخ الصراع الصهيوني الفلسطيني، وحاولت وتحاول تهميش سكان فلسطين الأصلانيين.
