إن ماركس وإنجلز ينشدان في الأيديولوجية الألمانية دراسة الإنسان الفعلي، الإنسان الحي، الإنسان في التاريخ. وإنهما ليؤكدان بلا كلل على فعالية الإنسان العملية، الثورية، التي سوف تغير الإنسان نفسه من جراء تغيير الشروط الاجتماعية التي يحيا فيها. إن وجود البشر الاجتماعي هو الذي يقرر وعيهم الاجتماعي. ولذا فإن الواجب يدعونا لأن نبدأ بدراسة الواقع الاجتماعي الحسي، دراسة "العلاقات التجريبية"، لأن هذه العلاقات هي التي تفسر تصوراتنا وأفكارنا، وليس العكس كما يحسب الأيديولوجيون الذين "تصبح الفكرة المجردة عندهم القوة المحركة للتاريخ.. بحيث يرتد التاريخ إلى تاريخ الفلسفة"، أو إلى "مجرد عملية تطور الوعي".
وكونهما يرفضان هذا التصور، فإن ماركس وإنجلز يرسمان الخطوط الكبرى لتصور جديد للتاريخ. إنهما "يهبطان من السماء إلى الأرض"، وينطلقان في دراسة تاريخ البشر، ويستخلصان الفكرة الخصبة القائلة إنّ المحرك الفعلي للتاريخ هو، من دون الفكر، إنتاج الحاجات الإنسانية.
إن جميع الثورات وما آلت إليه من عواقب تحددها شروط وجود الناس وحاجاتهم المادية. ومن هنا فإن العمل، العمل المنتج، وأشكال تقسيمه هي التي تشكل "مسرح التاريخ الحقيقي". ولما كانت حاجات البشر تتغير باستمرار، وتتطور، وتتعدد، وتختلف من عصر إلى عصر، فإن هذه التبدلات هي التي تقوم في أصل التحولات الاجتماعية.
ولذا كانت بنية المجتمع وقفاً على نمط الإنتاج القائم تاريخياً، وأن كل نمط للإنتاج ينطوي على نمط معين للتعاون، وبالتالي على شكل معين للعلاقات الاجتماعية. وعلى العموم، فإن نمط الإنتاج مرتبط بطبيعة القوى الإنتاجية التي كوّنها وطورها التاريخ السابق للجنس البشري.
