يحاول هذا الكتاب خدمة القارئ العادي وخدمة الإعلامي والمثقف في الوقت نفسه، وذلك من خلال مناقشة المفاهيم والمحاور التي يتواجه بها الإعلامي بالإجتماعي بالثقافي، أو يتناقضان، أو يتكاملان، وهو يحاول التأشير على الأسس العلمية التي وصلت إليها الدراسات الإعلامية والإجتماعية في علاقة الإتصال والإعلام بالمجتمع.
يتناول الكتاب في الفصل الأول، المفاهيم الأساسية في الإعلام والإتصال، وهذا لا بدء منه للقارئ لأن فيه خلاصات الدراسات الإعلامية والإتصالية، وفيه مفاهيم وظواهر ذات صلة وثيقة بثورة تكنولوجيا الإعلام والإتصال، في الفصل الثاني، يحاول الكتاب، إستعراض المفاهيم النظرية لكل من يحاول فهم المجتمع من منظور إعلامي، في الفصل الثالث، يتوسع الكتاب - نوعاً ما - في إستعراض الحاجات التي تحققها وسائل الإعلام، وهي حاجات إجتماعية فردية، الأولى تلبي حاجات المجتمع بإعتباره كياناً وهوية، والأخرى تلبي حاجات الفرد بإعتباره نوازع وحاجات ودوافع، في الفصل الرابع، يستعرض الكتاب ظاهرة الرأي العام، وهي عملية تتشكل في المجتمع، بين أفراده وجماعاته، وفي الفصل الخامس، يستعرض الكتاب أحوال المجتمعات العربية عبر مقدمة تستعرض بإيجاز خصائص المجتمعات العربية في تباينها وتماثلها، ويستعرض الفصل الثاني - بإسهاب - أحوال التنمية في المجتمعات العربية خصوصاً التنمية المتعلقة بمجتمع المعرفة، أما الفصل السادس والأخير، فكان لا بد من إستعراض أهم النماذج الإتصالية التي خلص إليها المؤلف في الدراسات الإتصالية الغربية.
إن هذا الكتاب محاولة لدراسة الإتصال والإعلام ليس بمعزل عن حاضنته (المجتمع) وصانعته في الوقت نفسه، لذلك قد يصنف هذا الكتاب في نطاق دراسات الإعلام السوسيو / ثقافية، بما سيساهم في خدمة مهتمين كثر من مثقفين وإعلاميين وتربويين وغير ذلك.
