تعد وسائل الإعلام – سواء كانت التقليدية (كالصحف أو التلفيزيون أو الإذاعة أو الوسائل الحديثة كالصحافة الالكترونية ومواقع الأخبار والمعرفة المختلفة على شبكة الانترنت، وكذلك مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي كالفيس بوك وتويتر والتي تعد الآن أحد وسائل نقل الأخبار والأكثر شهرة في العالم، وكل هذه الوسائل لها تأثير كبير على تشكيل البناء الإدراكي والمعرفي للفرد أو المجتمع ويساهم هذا البناء في تشكيل رؤية الفرد والمجتمع تجاه قضايا مجتمعة والقدرة على تحليلها واستيعابها لاتخاذ السلوك المناسب حول هذه القضايا، فوسائل الإعلام أيضا قادرة على تغيير سلوك وأنماط المجتمع، وقد يكون تأثير وسائل الإعلام في بعض الأحيان قويا جدا وقادر على نشر نمط سلوكي وثقافي واجتماعي ينتهجه الفرد أو المجتمع، وفي بعض الأحيان يكون تأثير وسائل الإعلام أقل تأثيرا ويستطيع الفرد أو المجتمع الخروج من النمط الفكري والمجتمعي والسياسي الذي ترسمه وسائل الإعلام، ويتوقف ذلك على مدى رغبة الفرد أو المتلقي للتعرض للرسائل والمعلومات التي تبثها وسائل الإعلام المختلفة فكلما كان الفرد أو المتلقي لديه رغبات واشباعات حول معلومات أو قضايا معينة فانه يتجه إلى وسائل الإعلام لإشباع رغباته وتطلعاته بما يسمى نظرية التعرض الإنتقائي بمعنى أن الفرد أو المتلقي يبحث دائما في وسائل الإعلام عما يتفق مع أفكاره واتجاهاته حتى لو كان ما يبحث عنه المتلقي هو مشاهدة أفلام سينمائية...
