تعددت جوانب الإثارة في تاريخ الأنباط وحضارتهم مثلما تعددت جوانب الغموض أيضاً، وعلى الرغم من مرور أكثر من قرن على إكتشاف هذه الحضارة على بيد "بيركهارت" وتوالي البحوث منذ ذلك الوقت، إلا أن صورة الحضارة النبطية لا تزال بحاجة للمزيد من المقاربات التي تجلي الجوانب الغامضة وتستكمل الأجزاء الناقصة لهذه الحضارة الفريدة وسماتها المثيرة.
ويحاول هذا البحث التوجه إلى القارئ المثقف بمستوياته المتعددة، إذ أن جل ما كتب عن حضارة الأنباط (وخصوصاً بالعربية) إما أنه جاء جافاً قاسياً تحت وطأة "تقاليد التخصص الآثاري" مما سيرهق القارئ العادي ويحرمه تمثل تجربة الأنباط الكلية، أو أنه جاء إستعراضياً - مسطحاً - تقريرياً - مما سيفقد تجربة الأنباط الحضارية من روايتها الإنسانية التي لا غنى عنها لتمثل جوهر تلك الحضارة.
يتضمن الفصل الأول من الكتاب: البحث في الجذور الأولى لهذه الحضارة بأصولها السكانية، ونشأة وتطور نظامها السياسي في خضم الأحوال السياسية السائدة آنذاك، ثم إستعراض المنطقة الجغرافية التي نشأت فيها وترعرعت هذه الحضارة المثيرة لينتهي إلى سلسلة ملوك دولة الأنباط.
وفي الفصل الثاني إستعرض الكتاب لما هو دارج من معارف إعلامية حول المدن والحواضر النبطية والأنماط المعمارية وسماتها، وفي الفصل الثالث إستعرض بين الأنباط بعناصره المختلفة من آلهة معبودة ومن معابد منتشرة في أهم المواقع النبطية، وفي الفصل الرابع - وهو الأخير - استعرض أنظمة المجتمع النبطي التي نظمت ذلك المجتمع فضبطت إيقاعاته لفترة قد تزيد عن خمسة قرون مديدة.
