قيل أنه ليس هناك قصة عربية قديمة، وإنما اتى هذا الفن محاكاة للقصة الأوربية بعد مرورها بعدة مراحل بدأت بالترجمة، ورداً على هذه الفكرة التى رأها الأستاذ "محمد مفيد الشوباش" تعادى الصواب والتاريخ قدم هذا الكتاب الذى كان على حجمة الصغير محتواه كبير فى قيمته، فقد إستطاع تفنيد هذه الفكرة، مبيناً بدلاً منها الصول العربية للقصة الأوربية فضلاً عن وجود قصة عربية قديمة، أورد العديد من أمثلتها، وهو فى ذلك لم يكتف بذكر اسم كل منها بل قدمها لنا مختصرة، ذاكراً أحداثها الرئيسية مع أهدافها الأدبية و كل ما يحيط بها من ظروف تزيد معرفة القارئ بهذا التراث. وقد تنقل بنا المؤلف على صفحات الكتاب بين أصل القصة العربية وقصص العرب الأولى، واحدة تلو الأخرى وصولاً إلى قصص الحب العذرى وقصص الشعبية.. إنه كتاب ممتع بعيد كل البعد عن ملل الكتابات الطويلة أو الدراسات التى لا يخوض غمارها إلا المختصصون.
