في روايته "تحت ظل المشانق" يرصد السيد عبد الرزاق الحسني الواقع السياسي في العراق تحت الحكم العثماني خلال الربع الأول من القرن العشرين، وبواكير الحراك الثوري والقومي العربي ضد الأتراك. عبر هذا الفضاء الروائي يصطنع الحسني لروايته راوياً واحداً يسرد بصيغة المتكلم غالباً، ويستخدم صيغة الغائب على ندرة، بما يتناسب مع الشكل السردي للسيرة الذاتية الخاصة لبطلها (أحمد) وإخوانه في المدرسة الذين ابدوا تمردهم على الواقع القائم، وأدى هذا إلى طردهم من المدرسة. في هذه الأثناء نشبت الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914) فقرر الأصدقاء وبدافع وطني إصدار جريدة سياسية يومية، وخاضوا من خلالها بحر السياسة ووسموها بـ (النهضة) وأخذت الجريدة تنشر بكل جرأة ما يخص العرب عامة والعراقيين خاصة حتى جاهرت بحقوقهم المغتصبة من السلطة الحاكمة. وامتدت فعاليات عملهم وأصبح لهم فرع في سورية، وأنشأت الأحزاب. وهكذا حتى وصل الأمر إلى أن أصدرت السلطة الأمر بالقبض على أعضاء الحزب وزجهم في السجون ومن ثمّ حَكم الديوان العرفي العالي في جلسته في 27 أغسطس 1915م بالإعدام شنقاً لكل من يتجاسر بالعداء للدولة، وأغلقت جريدة النهضة.
وهكذا ومن خلال الشخصيات والوقائع والأحداث التي تنتظم العمل تعري الرواية كثيراً من مظاهر الخلل التي تحفّ بالحراك الإجتماعي – الثوري، فتكشف الهوة الفاصلة بين النظرية والتطبيق، وفي المقابل، تٌعلي الرواية من قيمة التضامن الإجتماعي في العراق، ومن المروءة الشعبية التي تبلغ حد التضحية بالنفس دفاعاً عن الوطن والعروبة.
