بالرغم من كون "هوفارد ريم" نرويجي الشكل والطبيعة، لكن روحه شرقية، وبدايته الشعرية كانت كشاعر يؤمن بالمسيحية من خلال رؤياه الشعرية، لكنه، راح يترك هذا الإيمان لصالح النظرية الدينية المتفردة والبعيدة عن الأديان التقليدية، فهو صوفي النزعة، متأثر بوحدة الوجود وسريان القوة الإلهية في الأشياء كطاقة مبدعة وخالقة، لكنه بدأ يتعب عن هذا التوجه مقترباً من نظرة لا دينية وناقدة للأديان، كشاعر مرتد، لكنه لا يريد من الجيل الجديد أن يفقد إرثه وثقافته، إنه يريد إعادة تقييم التاريخ، لا للإيمان، بل للفن الثقافي.
وفي هذا الكتاب مختارات في شعره تعكس تلك النزعة التي جاءت نتيجة لمعطيات كثيرة. وستشفّ القارئ فلسفته في الحياة من خلال تلك المعاني التي حفلت بها قصائده. وقد ضمّ الكتاب حواراً مع الشاعر أجراه معه المترجم وليد الكبيسي والذي أضاء كثيراً من الجوانب التي لا بد للقارئ من معرفتها حول هوفارد ريم ليعرض أكثر وأكثر... معانيه المنسابة في نهر قصائده.
