يحتل جنيه مكانة رفيعة في الأدب الفرنسي، ربما تكون مكانة "الشاعر الملعون" أبي الشاعر بصفته مشرداً ومنبوذاً وخبيراً بالجحيم، وهو تقليد يضم في فرنسا كلاً من فيّون وفيولين ورامبو، ولكن جنيه عاش في القذارة والقلق الدائم والجريمة وسعى إلى ذلك كله، كما استطاع في الوقت نفسه أن يحوّل نفسه إلى موضوع لرؤية شعرية تتاخم حدود القداسة. فجان جنيه إذاً إنسان وكاتب مليء بالتناقضات... والكتاب هذا اقتراب منه... وأن تقترب من جان جنيه يعني ببساطة أن تُضيّع أحداثيتك الشخصية وتراجع حساباتك في المفاهيم التقليدية التي تتمسك بها لأنك وفي الطريق إليه، يمكن أن تفقد اتجاهاتك المألوفة ولا تدركه إلا وأنت عار ومبعثر. فالدخول في عالم جنيه مغامرة لا يمكن لأحد أن يخرج منها سالماً سوى المحصنين بدروع متينة من "الأخلاق". وهذا الكتاب مع جنيه دعوة إلى التعري والصدق والخوض في غمار تجربة أقل ما يمكن أن تفعله هو بعثرة المرء بمعتقدات ومبادئ وأخلاقيات كان يظنها صلبة وراسخة ويستند عليها يرتاح بلا أي قلق أو حياء.
