وهذا ما حدث للكثيرين الذين أغوتهم رمال جنيه المتحركة التي تمور في عوالمه المختلفة والمثيرة؛ فمن لاعب السيرك الشاب عبد الله الذي انتهت مغامرته مع جنيه بالإنتحار، إلى المغربي محمد القطراني الذي اختل عالمه مع رحيل جنيه، وتعرض عقله لعطبٍ دائم، وبقي حارساً مهووساً لقبر جنيه في العرائش، إلى الروائي الأمريكي إدموند وايت الذي اعترف؛ أن كتابته لسيرة حياة جنيه قد حولته إلى متشردٍ يهيم في العالم، وصولاً إلى دمشق والعرائش بحثاً عن طيف جنيه.
هذا الكتاب دعوة إلى السير على ذلك السلك الرفيع والمشدود، دعوة إلى التعري والصدق في غمار تجربة أقل ما يمكن أن تفعله، هو بعثرة المرء والعبث بمعتقدات ومبادئ وأخلاقيات كان يظنها راسخة، ويستند عليها ويرتاح بلا أي قلق أو حياء.
