تماسيح رؤوف مسعد هي الشخصيات والأفكار والمعتقدات الإيديولوجيات التي انتهى زمانها والتي استطاع أن يصورها بمهارة... في مزاج التماسيح يوظف رؤوف مسعد أشكالاً متعددة للسرد الروائي ويمتزج الخيال بالواقع... واقع الأقباط المصريين وطقوسهم اليومية، والعنف الذي يهددهم هم وغيرهم من المسلمين من قبل جماعات الإسلام السياسي الممولة من الخارج. وبعبارة أخرى التماسيح هي فانتازيا العنف والجسد والصراع الديني على مساحة واسعة من الأرض ما بين مصر والسودان وأوروبا على مساحة أوسع من الخيال.
ليس من الغريب، أن يغير الكاتب نصه، من طبعة لأخرى... على الأقل لا أحس أنا بغرابة. لأن النص ملكى، أتعامل معه بالإضافة أو الحذف قبل، (وبعد) الطبعة الأولى. فحينما أصدرت هذه الرواية، فى ظروف خاصة، ومعقدة، وعلى نفقتى الخاصة، بعد أن رفضتها روايات الهلال، وبعد أن عرفت أن من خلال التجربة العملية أن احترامى لنفسى، وما أكتبه، يتوجب على، أن أتحمل أنا المسؤولية الأدبية والمادية كاملة، ما دمت قد انتهجت هذا النوع من الكتابة. كذلك أعدت ترتيب بعض الفصول، أى عمل مونتاج جديد "للنص الجديد".
بقى شىء لا بد من شرحه للقارىء المتابع لكتاباتى: إن ما أضفته أو حذفته فى الطبعة الثانية، لم يكن بهدف الحصول على رضاء "المؤسسات"؛ مؤسسة النشر، أو مؤسسة الرواية، أو مؤسسة مكارم الأخلاق، أو المؤسسة الدينية؛ رجالها وأفكارهم،.. الهدف أكثر بساطة ومباشرة: هو أن أخلص الرواية من بعض ترهلها، وثرثرتها وأن أقوى منطقها الخاص؛ أى أجعلها حزمة واحدة متماكة وقوية.
