يعتبر الشاعر والأديب والصحافي روديارد كيبلنغ أول كاتب إنكليزي يفوز بجائزة نوبل في الآداب عام 1907. ولد كيبلنغ في بومباي (الهند) عام 1865. وقد عمل في حقل الصحافة في الهند من العام 1882 إلى العام 1889. وخلال هذه الفترة أنتج مجموعة أعمال متنوعة. قصص قصيرة، مسرحيات هزلية وقصائد، عرفت في إنكلترا وجعلت منه كاتباً مشهوراً.
ثم تنامت شهرته بعدئذ بالأعمال الثلاثية: "أناشيد متنوعة" (1886)، "قصص بسيطة من الهضاب" (1887) و"ثلاثة جنود" (1888). عاش كيبلنغ وزوجته في فيرمونت أربعة أعوام، كتب خلالها مؤلفه الذي اشتهر به شهرة واسعة وهو "كتاب الأدغال" (1894) عاد كيبلنغ إلى إنكلترا عام 1896 واستقر في باتمان في مقاطعة ساسيكس حتى وفاته عام 1936 وكان كتابه "كيم" الذي صدر عام 1901، قد اعتبر عموماً عمله الخالد.
أما هذا الكتاب "دموع التماسيح" وعنوانه الأصلي "Just so stories" فهو من أعماله المشهورة أيضاً، وقد كتبه للأطفال عام 1902، انطلاقاً من طبيعة اهتمامه بعالم الحيوان. وقد حوى هذا الكتاب معلومات هامة عن الحيوانات وطبائعها ساقها الكاتب بأسلوب قصصي شيّق وممتع وبلغة تحاكي لغة الأطفال وبخيال طفولي رائع. ضم الكتاب بطبعته هذا نصاً للقصص باللغة الإنكليزية يقابلها ترجمتها بالعربية، مع ملحق ضم مجموعة من الأسئلة تساعد الطفل أو الناشىء على استيعاب المعلومات وتحرك فيه ملكة التفكر والبحث والاستنتاج.
