في وسط الساحة النقدية المحلية، بين التيارين النقديين اللذين كانا سائدين تناول عبد الفتاح أبومدين النقد من زاويتين مختلفتين، اشتملت الأولى عند نقد تطبيقي في الإبداع، تركَّز في دراسة القصائد والدواوين، كما اهتمّ بالمراجعات النقدية التي تناول فيها مجموعة كبيرة من الكتب النقدية وغير النقدية.
أما الزاوية الأخرى من نقده فهو النقد النظري، وقد تركَّزَ هذا الجانب في ما يمكن تسميته بدراسة القضايا النقدية، حيث مال أبو مدين إلى طرح قضية ما من قضايا النقد بعيداً عن البحث في نصوص شعرية يستشهد بها على أقواله.
وتأتي أهمية الخطاب النقدي عند أبي مدين، في أنه ينتسب إلى حقبة مهمة في تاريخ النقد في المملكة العربية السعودية، وتأتي أهميته من ناحية أخرى أنه يعد مفصلاً من مفاصل الحركة النقدية في السعودية، فأبو مدين أحد الذين شاركوا في بدايات الدراسات النقديقة المهتمة بإصدار أحكام على الأعمال الأدبية، حيث يبقى شاهداً على تلك المرحلة بإنتاجه النقدي أكثر من إنتاجه الأدبي.
حاول هذا البحث النظر إلى أبي مدين الناقد من خلال تعدد إهتماماته، فهو وإن كان من الذين كَتَبوا المقالة النقدية، فقد توزعته مجموعة أخرى من الإهتمامات الأدبية، ولذلك مالت الدراسة إلى إستثمار كتاباته الأدبية في شرح وتفسير الخطاب النقدي، والإستفادة منها في دعم النتائج التي توصَّلتْ. إليها.
