إن العلاقة بين النقد الأدبي وعلوم اللغة قديمة قدم النقد نفسه، وقد شهدت هذه العلاقة نقلة نوعية متميزة في الآونة الأخيرة حيث بات الاتكاء على المناهج والمصطلحات اللسانية سمة مميزة لمجمل الاتجاهات النقدية تتفاوت بتفاوت التوجيه المعرفي والأيديولوجي لكل من هذه المناهج. وقد سعى زياد العون في هذا الكتاب إلى رصد الأيديولوجي في النص الروائي عند نجيب محفوظ. وهدفه من وراء ذلك دراسة الأيديولوجيا بصفتها أثراً نصياً، إنتاجاً وتوضعاً، وبمعنى آخر فإنه يحاول إظهار وبيان الطابع الأيديولوجي لنص نجيب محفوظ في مجادلة لاستكشاف وإضاءة الخصائص النصية للإيديولوجيا نفسها عند هذا الروائي وهذا ما يندرج في إطار "السيمانية العامة"، التي تستلهم سيمانية المعرفة. انطلاقاً من أن "التواصل اللغوي" هو، من حيث المبدأ، نقل المعرفة في أحد طرفي "الملفوظية" إلى طرفها الآخر، من خلال هذه الرؤية يحاول المؤلف تفحص المظاهر النصية العملية النقل المعرفي، كما تتجلى في ثلاثية نجيب محفوظ: "بين القصرين"، "قصر الشوق"، "السكرية".
