مع تزايد الحاجة إلى البحث العلمي في المجالات ذات الطابع المكاني، كالبحث في مجالات الموارد الطبيعية، والبحوث الزراعية والمشاريع الهندسية العملاقة، كالطرق والجسور والسكك الحديد والسدود، وكذلك التطبيقات التي تمتلك الطابع المكاني نفسه كالملاحظة البحرية والرحلات البريدة والمهمات العسكرية وحركات القطاعات العسكرية، دعت الحاجة المُلحة إلى تطوير نظم المعلومات المكانية، ومنها نظم المعلومات الجغرافية ونظم الإستشعار عن بعد ونظم تحديد المواقع الأرضية العالمية Global Positioning Systems GPS الذي هو محل إهتمامنا في هذا الكتاب.
يعد العراق من البلدان التي يعتمد إقتصادها على الموارد الطبيعية ذات الطابع المكاني، لذا فقد تطور البحث العلمي يوماً بعد يوم وأخذ حيزاً كبيراً من إهتمام الجامعات والمؤسسات البحثية أو المؤسسات التقليدية ذات العلاقة، كما أن إهتمامات تطوير البنية التحتية للبلد بمختلف إتجاهاتها، والإهتمامات العسكرية، كلها تعطي للمكان وتحديده وتمثيله على خرائط أهمية قصوى.

واكب هذا التطور تطور كبير في نوع البيانات التي تنتُجها وكالات الفضاء العالمية في مجالات إستكشاف الأرض ومواردها، وما رافق ذلك من تطور في البرامجيات التي تستخدم في تحليل ومعالجة هذه البيانات، وكان لهذا التطور موازياً لتطور آخر في مجال الأجهزة والتقنيات التي تُستخدم في إنتاج البيانات الأرضية وتقديمها للباحث لغرض المعالجة، ومن هذه التقنيات نظم تحديد المواقع الأرضية GPS.
وعلى الرغم من وجود آلاف الكتب باللغة الإنكليزية التي تناولت الموضوع بشكل كامل، إلا أنّ يبقى الباحث والمستخدم العربي بحاجة ماسة إلى كتاب باللغة العربية يلبي طموحاته لإغناء حاجته في هذا المجال، وقد ظهرت في هذه الفترة مجموعة من الكتب العربية التي تناولت بشكل أو بآخر تحديد المواقع الأرضية.
