ويعد هذا التقرير الأول من نوعه الذي تنشره منظمة الصحة ن الانتحار هو أمر يمكن الوقاية منه. وبرغم ذلك، يموت شخص كل 40 ثانية جراء الانتحار في مكان ما حول العالم، وهناك كثيرون آخرون يحاول الانتحار. فالانتحار يحدث في كل مناطق العالم وفي مختلف مراحل العمر. وبشكل خاص، نرى أن الانتحار يحتل المرتبة الثانية بين أهم أسباب الوفاة بين الشباب في الفئة العمرية 29-15 سنة على مستوى العالم.
ويعد هذا التقرير الأول من نوعه الذي تنشره منظمة الصحة العالمية، إذ يجمع بين طياته الحقائق المعروفة ويضعها في شكل ملائم حتى يتسنى اتخاذ الإجراءات الفورية اللازمة. ويهدف التقرير إلى زيادة الوعي حول خطورة مسألة الانتحار ومحاولات الانتحار على الصحة العامة، وإعطاء قضية الوقاية من الانتحار أولوية أكبر على جدول أعمال الصحة العامة على الصعيد العالمي. كما يهدف التقرير إلى تشجيع ودعم البلدان على إعداد أو تعزيز استراتيجيات شاملة للوقاية من الانتحار في إطار نهج متعدد القطاعات للصحة العامة.
