ولهذا فإن متابعة هيكل لما جرى في عالم الصحافة في تلك الآونة من تاريخ مصر، على هذه الصفحات إنما هو مراجعة لما جرى في عوالم السياسة آنذاك.
وفي هذا الكتاب آثر هيكل رواية القصة كما عاشها، لذا فقد بدا الكتاب في جزء منه وكأنه تجربة ذاتية، وهذا لا بأس فيه ما دام الموضوع عاماً ووقائعه جزءاً من التاريخ، ثم دخول هيكل غليه هو من باب الشهود وليس من باب القضاة. ومن ناحية أخرى فلقد أراد الكاتب-والكتاب يتبع أسلوب التجربة الذاتية في كتابته-أن تظهر وتتفتح مناظر القصة ومشاهدها أمام القارئ كما جرت أمامه، ولتفصح بالتالي الوقائع عن مكنوناتها وتفضي بأسرارها على النحو الذي وقعت به فعلاً أثناء متابعته كصحفي لها. والهدف من وراء هذا الكتاب، كما حدده هيكل-ليس رواجه وتعداده من أكثر الكتب مبيعاً، ولكن الغاية هي كتاب موثق يبقى للتاريخ.
