نظراً لأهمية البذور وللدور الكبير الذي تلعبه في إنتاج المحاصيل، اهتمت المؤسسات العلمية المتخصصة في كثير من دول العالم بتربية أصناف عالية الإنتاج من المحاصيل المختلفة، وقد وجد أن الكثير من هذه الأصناف عالية الإنتاج تكون قابلة للإصابة بالأمراض، ولذلك فإن اختيار سلامة البذور والتعرف على ميكانيكية تقل المرض من البذرة إلى النبات الناتج عنها والظروف البيئية المساعدة على الإصابة كلها من العوامل التي يجب دراستها لتجنب المرض، ومعرفة طرق الوقاية منه ومكافحته.
وفي هذا الإطار جاء هذا الكتاب التي يعالج المؤلف فيه أمراض البذور من خلال عرضه لمجموعة من الأبواب جاءت على النحو التالي: أهمية نقل الأمراض النباتية بالبذور مقارنة بعوامل أخرى، الكائنات التي تنقل بالبذور ميكانيكية نقل الإصابة من البذرة إلى النبات، الأوبئة المسببة في أمراض البذور والعلاقات بين الكائنات في النقل بالبذور، المشاكل المرضية لتخزين البذور، طرق مكافحة أمراض البذور، الطرق العملية لاختبار سلامة البذور.
