هذا كتاب جامع شامل لأطراف متباينة من فنون الأدب والحكمة والقول، لا يرتكز على موضوع واحد أو فكرة محددة، وإنما جمع فيه من الحكم والمواعظ والآداب ومنثور الكلام وجميل الأشعار وغريب الأخبار من منتخبات الكتب النفيسة المفيدة التي تملأ مكتبتنا الإسلامية، هدفت من خلاله أن يكون عوناً ورافداً للدعاة والواعظين، وهذا اللون من التأليف ليس جديداً على المكتبة الإسلامية فقد سلك هذا النهج كثير من العلماء والأدباء من مختلف الطبقات، وقد صنفت ذلك تحت مسمى "الكشكول".
وفي العادة فـ"الكشكول" يجمع طرفاً من كل فن، فهو لون أدبي وعظي محبب إلى النفس ومن شأن هذا اللون من التأليف أن يدفع السأم والملل والخمول حيث تتنقل بين صفحاته بين الحكمة والأدب وبين الشعر ومنثور الكلام من موضوعات مختلفة في وقت واحد.
وحين بدأ المؤلف هذا المشروع لم يكن في خاطره أن يكتب كتاباً خاصاً في هذا الأمر وإنما هي نقولات كانت تستهوينه من حين لآخر، وكان يدونها لعله يحتاج إليها في حينها وإذا بها بعد فترة ليست بالقصيرة كم هائل ومتنوع، ومع إلحاح الأصحاب على أن يعم النفع على العامة والخاصة، عزم على إصدارها بعد تبويبها تبويباً اجتهادياً، ولذا فالقارئ قد يلحظ شيئاً من التكرار لا في النثر وإنما في الأشعار وعلة هذا أنه قد يكون مناسباً لموضوعه، وهذا راجع إلى دقة وحذاقة القارئ، وقد حرص الباحث رغم كثرة النقولات -على الاختصار فهو غيض من فيض تمتلئ به مكتبتنا الإسلامية.
