يعد صاحب هذا "الكشكول" - محمد بهاء الدين العاملي - واحدٌ من أفذاذ العلم والفقه والفلسفة والرياضيات، وقدوةٌ في أدب الدين وأدب الدنيا، وكان يُعد أيضاً من نوادر زمانه في مختلف ميادين العلوم والفنون والمعرفة، ألف لنا هذا الكتاب النفيس وجعله سِفَرْاً جليلاً يحتوي بين دفتيه مواضيع مختلفة في العلم والأدب والفن، يكاد مَن يفتحه ليتقصى ما فيه، أن ينجذب إليه، لسحر ما فيه، من أخبار وحكم وإعجاز وأسرار، ورسائل وأشعار.
وخير الكلام هو ما يقوله مؤلف هذا الكتاب عنه: "... فيه نوادرَ تتحرك لها الطِّباع، وتهُش لها الأسماع، وطرائف تَسرُّ المحزون، وتُزري بالدر المخزون، ولطائف أصفى من رائق الشراب، وأبهى من أيام الشباب، وأشعارٍ أعذبَ من الماء الزلال، وألطف من السحر الحلال، ومواعظ لو قُرئت على الحجارة لانفجرت... وسميته (بالكشكول)...
وبناءً على ما تقدم قسّم المؤلف كتابه إلى خمسة أجزاء مختلفة الموضوعات نقرأ فيها: "أحاديث نبوية"، و"ألغاز"، و"أمثال"، و"بلاغة"، و"خطب"، و"أدعية"، و"قصص وحكايات"، ومن "كلام سيدنا عليّ كرم الله وجهه"، و"مواعظ" وغيرها من موضوعات ومسائل ذات صلة.
من هذا "الكشكول" نقرأ: "مقاربة الناس في أخلاقهم أمن غوائلهم، من طلب شيئاً ناله أو بعضه، زهدك في راغب فيك نقصان حظ، ورغبتك في زاهد فيك ذل نفس"، "سبب الحزن هجوم ما تكرهه النفس ممن هو فوقها، وسبب الغضب هجوم ما تكرهه النفس ممن هو دونها، والغضب حركة إلى الخارج، والحزن حركة إلى الداخل، فيحدث عن الغضب السطوة والإنتقام لبروزه، ويحدث عن الحزن المرض والسقم لكمونه، ولهذا يعرض الموت من الحزن ولا يعرض من الغضب.
