يتناول هذا الكتاب قصة الحمام المهاجر، الذي استوطن، ذات يوم، أمريكا الشمالية، بأسرابه، التي سدّت الفضاء، حاجبةً الشمس، ثم ما لبثت أعداده أن تناقصت حتى غدا، كالماموث وطائر الدودو، واحداً من أيقونات الانقراض، بعد أن أعمل فيه إنسان تلك البلاد يدَ القتل. وقد تزامن نشر الكتاب مع المئوية الأولى لموت مارثا؛ الحمامة الأخيرة من جنس هذا الحمام، التي قضت في واحد من مطائر حديقة حيوان سينسيناتي في أوهايو. ويبرز عمل فولر هذا حنيناً إحيائياً لذكرى طائر مثَّل أهميَّة كبيرة لمحيط أمريكا البيئي، كما يؤشّر انقراضه إلى هشاشة بعض الكائنات الحية أمام عبث الإنسان بالطبيعة. وقد حظي الكتاب بمراجعات مهمَّة في الصحف والمجلات المختصّة، وقالت عنه مجلة «نيوسينتيست»: إنه يقدِّم بأسلوبه وتصاويره الأخاذة رواية دقيقة وبديعة عن صعود نجم هذا الطائر وأفوله.
