لقد أجمع نقاد الأدب على أن جون ميلتون أحد ثلاثة هم أعظم الشعراء قاطبة في الأدب الإنجليزي، ويقصدون معه شكسبير، وردزورث، وعلى أنه أعظم ممثل لعصره. بل فضله بعض النقاد على شعراء الأمم المختلفة السابقين واللاحقين.
وعلى أية حال، بلغ ميلتون مبلغاً من الشهرة في عصره، جعل من كانوا يفدون لزيارة بريطانيا وقتذاك لا يرغبون إلا فى رؤية رجلين لا ثالث لهما: أوليفر، كرومويل، وجون ميلتون.

وقد بذلت جهدي في وضع الحواشي فيما يتعلق بأسماء القصائد والأعلام تيسيراً على السادة القراء. بالإضافة إلى ترجمة النص الأصلي للفصل المتقدم ذكره.
وعسى أن يجد القارئ في هذه السيرة ما يستضيء به على نحو أوفى، حيث لم تترك شاردة ولا واردة للتعريف بهذه الشخصية المثيرة في تاريخ الأدب والسياسة والدين.
