ليس من المستطاع أن يُستمدّ علم النفس الإيجابيّ من الظواهر النفسيّة وحدها، وإذا كان مستحيلاً فأكثر منه إستحالةً أن يُستمدّ من مظاهر المرض وحده.
إنّ هذا العلم يحتاج، فوق ذلك، إلى أساس تنظَّم هذه الظواهر بمقتضاه؛ ولم يُحجم "ألفرِد آدلر" عن الإعتراف بهذه الحاجة، وذلك بإعترافه بمنطق الصلات الإجتماعيّة في الدنيا على أنّه حقيقة مطلقة من حقائق ما وراء الطبيعة، فإذا أقررنا هذا المبدأ وجب علينا أن ننتقل إلى النظر في نفسيّة الفرد من حيث علاقته به؛ ويمكن تحديد الطريقة الّتي تربط حياة الفرد الداخليّة بالكائن الإجتماعي في ثلاثةٍ من "اتّجاهات الحياة" - كما يسمّيها العلماء - وهي إستجاباته العامّة للمجتمع وللعمل وللحبّ.
