يٌشكِّل كِتابُ "الأخْطَل الكَبير" للدُّكتور فَخْر الدِّين قَباوة قراءة علميّة أدبيّة لشاعر عاصر نُضج الصِّراع الفنّيّ بين الكبار في حلبة السَّبق والتَّميّز والإنطلاق.
وقد استطاع أن يتصدّى لجرير الذي أخمل شعراء عصره بقدرته في البيان والخطاب، وأن يتقدّم صفوف أقرانه ليصبح شاعر بني أُميّة، ويَجعل من أنداده أفراس رهان تتساقط من خلفه، ثُمّ يُودِّع الدنيا مستعليّاً وموصياً الفرزدق بحمل رايته في المُقارَعة والنضال.
ولقد تعرّض كثير من القدماء والمعاصرين لهذا الشاعر الفحل، فسلّطوا الأضواء على جوانب من خصوصيّاته، وقَدَّموا مقولات لا تُمثّل كامل ما يبتغيه القارئ من الأديب الكبير، ثمّ تيسّر لهذا الكتاب أن يَجمع بين تلك المقولات وما تَضمَّنه ديوان الأخطل، ليُقدِّم الصورة الفضفاضة عن حياته وشخصيّته وفنّه؛ فشاعرنا هذا قد دَرَّب قريحته منذ الطفولة على مُنافَحة معاصريه، حتّى تَقدَّم الصفوف شاعراً للخلافة، ولسانها في المجالس والمنتديات، والمُنافِح عنها لكلّ خصم ومُعانِد ومُنافِس؛ وفي خلال تلك الرحلة تَغنَّى بمفاخره وعشيقَته ابنه الحان، فكان ما ابتكره من "الغزل الخمريّ"، وما نشرَ عمّا بين جوانحه من متناقضات في السِّمات ومُواجهة الصعاب.
وكان له من الثَّقافة العربيّة وسُرْعة البديهة والتكيّف الإجتماعيّ مَعين لتَصدًّر الصفوف والخطوة عند الأمراء والولاة والأدباء، وتجاوُز ما استغلّه خصومه من صبغته الدينيّة وسفاسف المواقف والتصرّفات وما انغمسوا هم فيه من فجور الهجاء، حتّى صار مُمثّلاً لعصره يبرز أثر البيئة في تكوين الشَّخصيّة العربيّة الخالصة، والصوت الصِّحافيّ للخلافة والسياسة الأُمويّة؛ وقد ساعده على ذلك إستيعاب ثقافة المُعاصرين والأسلاف، مع عبوديّة للشِّعر في النَّقد الذاتيّ بالتنقيح والتقويم، فإذا هو الطبقة الأولى من الشعراء الإسلاميِّين، والمُتفوِّقُ بينهم في المَديح والغَزَل الخمريّ والتَّخفُّف من إنتهاك الأعراض والقِيَم، وفي كثير من السِّمات الفنيّة اللامعة.
