يقدم هذا الكتاب محاولة لفهم الحقيقة التي يتضمنها الإسلام نفسه، هذه الحقيقة كما فهمها "الفكر المتعدد" والمؤلف ينظر إلى الفكر الإسلامي على أنه فكر كوني يعالج قضايا الحياة الإنسانية من منظور شمولي لا من منظور قومي أو عرضي أو سلالي أو إقليمي، لأن الإسلام الذي ينتسب إليه هذا الفكر هو دين شمولي إضافة إلى أن ممارسة التفكير في ظل الإسلام وانطلاقاً من الثوابت والقيم الإسلامية جعلت هذا الفكر بالفعل فكراً عالمياً أو إنسانياً.
إن الأطروحة الفكرية التي يقوم عليها هذا الكتاب الذي يقع في جزئين هي الإقرار بثنائية عالمي الغيب والشهادة التي كشفها القرآن الكريم للفكر البشري وأقام عليها النظام التشريعي والأخلاقي والعقدي. وفي الجزء الأول يبين المؤلف أن القرآن هو الحدث الكوني الذي حقق التواصل بين العالمين تارة حين يلتقيان في تكامل وتعاضد وتارة حين يختلفان لدى بعض المفكرين والعلماء فيستقل كل منهما ويحاول توجيه الآخر.
وقد أوضح المؤلف قصور العقل عن إدراك الواقع بغير التماس المبادئ الفاعلة في هذا الواقع من خارجه، كما رأى أن التاريخ ليس مطلقاً، لأنه محاط بالميتاريخ، أي موجهات من خارج الذات الإنسانية وبفعل وحي صادر عن خالق هذا الكون ومدبرة إضافة إلى أنه يستعرض الكثير من الآراء حول النبوة باعتبارها صلة وصل بين الإنسان وخالقه. ويستعرض ما أسهم به الفكر الإسلامي في إقامة علم النبوة ويبين أن معيار تصديق النبوة هو في مضمون ما جاءت به.
وفي الجزء الثاني يستعرض المؤلف قضايا الفكر الإسلامي الحديث من خلال ما عرفه من جدل حول تلك القضايا، وقد تتبع أفكار المجددين والمصلحين والمهتمين بقضايا الإسلام وشؤون المسلمين في العصر الحديث مبيناً أن الفكر الإسلامي يعني المنهج الفكري المستعمل وفق الرؤية الإسلامية في النظر والاستنتاج والتحقيق والتأويل.
والمؤلف يذهب إلى أن التفاعل بين العقل والنقل ازداد ظهوراً وقوة في العصر الحديث، وهو يرى أن الديني قد انفصل عن الدنيوي في حياة المسلمين اليوم، وبصورة تتزايد وتتنامى والهوية الإسلامية ليست موضع اهتمام أية فئة من فئات المجتمع، إلا الفئة المتخصصة بالدراسات الإسلامية.
