قد يعني "التاريخ المتوسطي" أموراً عدة، وهذا الكتاب هو تاريخ البحر الأبيض المتوسط، بدلاً من أن يكون تاريخاً للجزر المحيطة به، وبشكل أخص، إنه تاريخ الشعب الذي اجتاز البحر، وعاش على القرب من شواطئه وفي الموانئ والجزر.
فالمسألة التي أشتغل عليها تتعلق بالمسار الذي صار بموجبه المتوسط بدرجات متفاوتة مندمجاً في مجال تجاري وثقافي وحتى (تحت الحكم الرومانسي) سياسي واحد، وكيف أن فترات الإندماج هذه انتهت أحياناً بتفكك عنيف، سواء عن طريق الحروب أم عن طريق الطاعون.
وقد عينت خمس مراحل متميزة: المرحلة الأولى من تاريخ المتوسط انتهت إلى حالة من الفوضى بعد عام 1200 ق. م، أي خلال الفترة التي قيل إنها تؤرخ لسقوط طروادة؛ مرحلة ثانية من تاريخ المتوسط استمرت إلى حدود 500 ب. م؛ مرحلة ثالثة من تاريخ المتوسط نشأت تدريجياً ثم بعد ذلك شهدت أزمة كبرى خلال فترة الموت الأسود (1947)؛ مرحلة رابعة من تاريخ المتوسط كان عليها أن تتعاطى مع التنافس المتزايد من جهة المحيط الأطلسي، وهيمنة القوى الأطلسية، وانتهت حوالي فترة فتح قناة السويس عام 1869؛ أخيراً مرحلة خامسة من تاريخ المتوسط صار فيها معبراً في إتجاه المحيط الهندي، والتقى بهوية جديدة مباغتة في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
