يضم الكتاب محاضرة كان الشيخ أبو الحسن علي الحسني النووي قد ألقاها في قاعة المحاضرات بالمجمع الثقافي الكبير في أبو ظبي (دولة الإمارات) تحت عنوان "ترشيد الصحوة الإسلامية وذلك في 20 من ربيع الآخر سنة 1409هـ/1988م. وكان اختيار الموضوع متجاوباً لأوانه ومن وحي الساعة وحاجة العصر، فقد كثر الحديث عن الصحوات الإسلامية في بلاد مختلفة وكثر التفاؤل بها والاعتماد عليها، وكانت ولا تزال في حاجة إلى توجيهات عميقة مخلصة، واستعراض أمين دقيق في ضوء دراسة واسعة هادفة للتاريخ، وتجارب الدعوات والصحوات، والحركات، والانتفاضات قديماً وحديثاً، ومعرفة واقع الحياة والمحيط، والاتجاهات والحركات ذات الخطر والأثر في الماضي والمستقبل، التي تعاصر هذه الصحوة بقوة ونشاط، وأهداف عميقة بعيدة، وما تعيشه هذه الأمة من محن وأزمات، ومؤامرات ومخططات دقيقة رهيبة، ولا يسوغ التفاعل عنها والاستهانة بشأنها وخطرها.
وقد عاصر الإمام النووي صحوات كثيرة يمضي عليها نحو نصف قرن، وعرف كثيراً منها عن كثب لا عن كُتُبْ، وكان له اتصال بقادة بعضها وتقدير واعتراف بمجهودهم ونتائجه، وترحيب وتشجيع لبعضها، وتوجيهات ولفتات أخوية إلى ما يكمل النقص ويزيد في القوة والتأثير وإلى ما يستحق العناية الزائدة والاهتمام الأكثر من القادة والموجهين والمسؤولين والعاملين. من وحي كل هذا تأتي هذه المحاضرة التي مثلت هذه الملاحظات والتوجيهات التي سبقت للإمام النووي في هذا الموضوع في أزمنة ومناسبات مختلفة، خير تمثيل، والهدف من تدوينها في هذا الكتاب مساعدة القائمين على هذه الصحوات المباركة، في ترشيد هذه الصحوات والزيادة في قيمتها وتأثيرها والممكن من صيانتها من الاستهداف للمشاكل التي هي في غنى عنها، ولتحقيق أكثر ما يمكن تحقيقه في غاياتها وأهدافها.
