يبعث هذا الكتاب برسالتين هامتين: إحداهما للمنتمين إلى الطريق الصوفي؛ والأخرى إلى المناوئين لهذا الطريق.. أما الأولى؛ فالهدف منها: تثقيف المنتمين إلى الطريق الصوفي بما هو واجب شرعًا ومعلوم من الدين بالضرورة؛ بالإضافة إلى التأكيد والتشديد على أهمية الالتزام بالمنهج الصوفي المعتدل الذي لا إفراط فيه ولا تفريط؛ وذلك بحكم طبيعة ووسطية هذا الدين الذي ننتمي إليه جميعًا. وأما الأخرى؛ فالهدف منها: دعوة المناوئين للطريق الصوفي إلى المراجعة العلمية والموضوعية لكل ما يتعلق بالتصوف وقضاياه؛ وذلك من خلال فقه الدين بخصائصه العامة ومبادئه الكلية؛ مع العلم أن كثيرًا من شيوخ الإسلام والأئمة الأعلام قد سلكوا هذا الطريق على هدى وبصيرة، كابن القيم؛ وابن حجر؛ والعز بن عبد السلام؛ والشيخ عبد الله الشرقاوي؛ والدكتور عبد الحليم محمود؛ والشيخ محمد متولي الشعراوي، ومئات غيرهم رضي الله عنهم.
