منذ أنْ بلغت الخامسة عشرة، وصار مولاي (عَسْكَر) مطمئنًا لإرسالي وحيدًا مع القوافل، لم يبق تاجر إلا عرفني وعرفته، ولم يبق دكان إلا ودخلته؛ أشفقوا عليّ في الرحلات الأولى لمّا عرفوا قصّتي، ثم تحوّلت الشفقة إلى احترام ثم إلى ثقة، حتى إنّني لم أعد أبالي باحتمالات الربح أو الخسارة، لأنهم كلّهم - لما عرفوا وَلَعي بالقراءة والنسخ وشراء الكتب والقراطيس والمخطوطات- صاروا يبادرون إلى شراء ما آتي به من بغداد وإرباحي به، كما صاروا يخصّونني بأجود بضائعهم دون أنْ يُغلوا علي في الأسعار، حتى يمنحوني الوقت الكافي لإشباع هوسي بالكتب والمخطوطات، وكأنهم جميعًا يتواطأون على التخفيف من الشعور بذنب لم يقترفوه، بل اقترفه نفر من لصوص الرقيق الذين أوصلوني لما أنا عليه!
رغم المسافة التي تفصل جزيرة (قيس) عن (بغداد)، إلا أنّني لم أشعر يومًا بأنني بعيد عن (عائلتي)! فكثير من قاطني الجزيرة أعدّهم أشقّاء أو أعمامًا أو أخوالاً؛ وما أكثر أقارب الغريب! أُفطر في دكان وأتغدّى في مركب وأشرب ماء الورد في مكتبة وأتعشّى في مسجد. وإن أدركني النعاس نمت حيث أنا، وإن أسعدني الحظ ووقعت على كتاب منسوخ ببنان خطّاط مشهور، طِرْت به إلى كوخي المنزوي على الشاطئ، وأشعلت الفانوس ووضعته على أرضية الكوخ ثم انبطحت على بطني، رأسي عند الفانوس وأمام عيني مباشرة صفحات الكتاب، أتملاّها وأُطالعها وأقلّبها بتلذّذ شهيّ، حتى يسقط رأسي على الكتاب، فأنام مبطوحًا!
