تدور فكرة هذه الرواية حول الأنماط الذوقيَّة في المفاضلة بين الشخصيات النسائيَّة، ويعمد الكاتب إلى استخدام الأسلوب السرديِّ في عرض مذاهب العشق عند كل بطل من أبطال الرواية، مبيِّنًا تفاوت النظرة أو الرؤية العقليِّة والقلبيَّة للصفات التي يرتضيها كل بطل في محبوبته؛ فمنهم من يرى جمال المرأة يكمُن في جوهرها وفي طبائعها الذاتيَّة دون النظر إلى المرتبة الماليَّة أو الجماليَّة التي تعتليها، ومنهم من يرى أن التمايز بين امرأة وأخرى يكمن في ظاهر المرأة؛ أي في درجة جمالها. وقد نجح «نجيب الحدَّاد» في استبطان الذات الإنسانيَّة لأبطاله من خلال عنصر الحوار الذي عمد إليه في روايته هذه؛ وذلك لما يتمتَّع به الحوار من صفة المكاشفة التي تحوِّل الأحاسيس الخاصَّة بالدَّواخل الإنسانيَّة إلى صورة لفظيَّة تخرجها من الإطار الذاتيِّ إلى الإطار الجمعي.
