يأتي هذا الكتابة بمثابة تحقيق لمخطوط في التراث العربي القديم وهي ديوان الشاعر "الحسن بن علي الضبي" الشهير بابن وكيع التنيسي المتوفي سنة 393هـ وبالتعريف هو: الحسن بن علي أحمد بن محمد بن خلف بن حيان بن صدقة بن زياد الضبي، من بني ضبة القبيلة العدنانية المعروفة وقد اشتهر باسم ابن وكيع التنيسي، ويقال له العاطس، وكنيته أبو محمد وأصل أسرته من بغداد...
وفي هذا العمل يتبع "هلال ناجي" منهجاً في تحقيقه لهذا الديوان يتلخص في تصويب النص المخطوط من التحصيف والتحريف وتوئيقة بتخريج أشعاره وتثبيت فروق الروايات، حيث استطاع من خلال ملاحقة هذا الشاعر في الكتب والمخطوطات القديمة وأهمها مجموعة حسين نصار المحتواة على (630) بيتاً لابن وكيع إضافة إلى مخطوطة "عذر الخليج بشعر ابن وكيع" المحتواة على اكثر من ثلثمائة بيت في الشعر أن يخرج الديوان بأبهى حلَة.
يقول هلال ناجي في معرض تقديمه لإبن وكيع في مقدمة كتابه "... لقد كان ابن وكيع داعية سفر، وقد قال في مدح السفر أجمل الأبيات ورأى السفر محققاً لفوائد خمس: تفرج النفس والغنى وكسب العلم بالأدب ورفقه الماجدين... ورغم دعوة شاعرنا إلى عدم التفريط بالأصدقاء إلا أن تجارب الحياة المرة جعلته يؤثر العزلة في أخريات حياته مكتفياُ بمنادمة المدام: "نادم مدامك دون الناس كلهم، فرداً وحيداً ففيها عنهم شغل/ مات الذين إذا حدثتهم فرحوا، بما تقول، وإن خاطبتهم عقلوا/ لم يبقى إلا أناس فاض عيبهم/ فجملة الأمر فيهم أنهم سفل/ إن حدثوا كذبوا غرضوا، أو موزحوا سخفوا، أو جولسو ثقلو".
