مصنف هذا الديوان شاعر طبقت شهرته الآفاق وذاع صيته في المشرق والمغرب، وقرأ ديوانه ألوف القراء والمهتمين، أما لماذا كان هذا الشاعر فذلك لأن مراحل حياته وشبابه على قصرها، عملت على تضخيم تجربته الشعرية وتدفقها وازدهارها، وأطلقته من حدود البيئة الضيقة إلى آفاق إنسانية أوسع وأرحب. وقد لا يعرف الكثيرون من قراء شعر أبي القاسم الشابي أن له رسائل لا تقل أهمية عن قصائد ديوانه، وربما كان لهذا السبب اختيار المحقق له لأن في الرسائل المرفقة بهذا الديوان ما يلقي الضوء على حياة الشاعر التي كانت قصيرة جدا بعدد سنواتها ولكنها كانت مليئة بالمعاناة الكبيرة بسبب المرض الفتاك الذي أصابه في ربيع شبابه وجعله قلقا حزينا من التفكير في أنه سيموت قبل أن يؤدي رسالة الدنيا التي يحس أنه لم يخلق لغيرها في هذا العالم.
