علم الجيوديسيا هو العلم الذي يحدد من خلاله شكل الأرض وقياس أبعادها وتمثيل سطحها على مستوى الخريطة، وكنتيجة للارتباط الشديد بين هذا العلم وغيره من العلوم ساعدت التطورات الحديثة لهذه العلوم على تطور علم الجيوديسيا مما أمكن تحديد شكل الأرض الحقيقي بدقة عالية.
وقد تبنى المؤلف محمد يوسف "دراسة علم المساحة الطبوغرافية والجيوديسيا فعمد إلى إصدار هذا الكتاب الذي يشتمل إلى جانب الأبواب التقليدية التي تحتوي الأسس الخاصة بالتثبيت الأفقي لنقط الربط الجيوديسية على سطح الأرض والمشاكل المتعلقة بها على عرض مبسط لنظرية القياس الكهرومغناطيسي للمسافات وذلك بدون الدخول في تفاصيل أنواع معينة من الأجهزة ودراسة العقبات، بناء الأبراج وتبادل الرؤية، مصادر الأخطاء في الأرصاد المساحية، ضبط شبكات المثلثات...
وقد خصص الكاتب جانباً من مؤلفه للميزانيات الجيوديسية مع الاهتمام بطرق ضبط شبكاتها، وكذلك الميزانية المثلثية وتطبيقاتها بطريقة مبتكرة ومبسطة.
