أسماء الأماكن العربية في معظمها وصف كلي أو جزئي لماهية المكان المسمى أو طبيعته أو ما هو مقام (أو كان مقاماً) عليه. وهكذا فإن معرفة المدلول اللغوي للاسم (قديماً وحديثاً) كفيلة بإعطائنا معلومات مهمة عن طوبوغرافية المكان ومعالمه الجغرافية أو البيئة-وفي هذا فائدة جلي للمتخصصين من جغرافيين وجيولوجيين ومساحين ومهندسين وسواهم من العلماء والطلاب المهتمين بدراسات الأرض والمياه والزراعة والمعادن والآثار,
إني كقارئ أتأمل مثلاً أسماء الأماكن التالية: اربد، أورفة، برقة، جدة، الجمهور، الرقة، الرملة، الرياض، سترة، الشارقة، صفاه، صيداء ظفار، العرقوب، القبيبة، القرية، القصيبة، قطر، قيسارية، الكوت، الكويت، المجدل، النوبة، وغيرها... فتمر بخاطري وأنا أستعرضها مشارف الوطن العربي من أقصاه-الأماكن نفسها، أو الأقطار التي بها أسماء الأماكن هذه، أو الأحبة الذين هم فيها، أو الذكريات التي هي في ذاكرتي ومخيلتي عنها. إنها ألفاظ تسمو عن الكلمات. لذا كثيراً ما أتجاهل المعنى اللغوي للكلمة وأحياناً قد أجهله، فلا يخطر ببالي الرجوع إلى المعجم!
الأستاذ نايجل غروم خريج معهد الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية بلندن مستشرق تخصص في طوبوغرافية الجزيرة العربية وعادياتها، وقد أرجعته هذه الألفاظ ومثيلاتها إلى المعجم (بل المعاجم العربية-العربية والعربية-الإنجليزية) في كل مرة فكان هذا المعجم الفذ، الذي آمل ألا يطول الوقت قبل أن نخرجه في مكتبة لبنان كاملاً بالعربية.
