لم يدر أحد حقيقة غاتسبي، ذلك الشاب فاحش الثراء، مالك القصر البديع المنيف في إحدى ضواحي "لونغ آيلند" الراقية على ضفة خليج ساوند في نيويورك، فمن قول قائل إنه جاسوس ألماني عمل لصالح "العدو" إبان الحرب العالمية الأولى، إلى زعم زاعم أنه مهرب خمور استفاد من فترة تحريمها فراكم ثورة خيالية، إلى مروج شائعة بأنه مجرم وقاتل.. إلخ، لكن جميع الخائضين أفادوا من كرمه المفرط، بل بالأحرى تبذيره الأسطوري، ولكن الطريف في الأمر أن عدداً نزيراً من أولئك المثرثرين التقى بغاتسبي أو حدّثه وجهاً لوجه، كان غاتسبي يبدو رجلاً دون ماض محدد أو نشأة واضحة أو حتى في عائلة.
ضَّمنّت رواية غاتسبي العظيم لكاتبها منزلة مرموقة بين أقطاب الروائيين الأمريكيين، إذ شهد لها ت. س إليوت (1888- 1965) بقولّه: "أثارت إهتمامي وإعجابي أكثر من أيّة رواية جديدة سواءً في الأدب الإنجليزي أو الأمريكي لسنوات عديدة"، بل إن بعض النقاد يرى أن الرواية ما هي إلا رؤية فيتزجيرالد القصيدة "الأرض اليباب" التي نشرها إليوت عام 1922.
