سكوت فتزجرالد (1896- 1940) كاتب أمريكي كبير، كان له تأثير بارز على الرواية الأمريكية المعاصرة، وقد اعترف الكاتب الأمريكي العالمي الكبير ارنست همنغواي بأنه استفاد أكبر الفائدة من فتزجرالد وتعلم الفن الروائي على يديه، وقد عاش فتزجرالد حياة عاصفة قاسية، وكانت زوجته مصدراً من مصادر قلقه وعذابه، فكان يحبها بجنون، وكانت تغار من كتاباته وحياته الأدبية.
ومن هنا كانت تعمل بإستمرار على إبعاده عن الكتابة مما دفعه إلى السكر والإنغماس في الخمر ليل نهار، وانتهى به الأمر إلى الموت في سن مبكرة، وبعد أن حصل على قدر من السهرة والمال في بداية حياته الأدبية خسر كل شيء في سنواته الأخيرة.
فانطفأت شهرته وجفت موارده المالية، أما زوجته فقد انتهى بها الأمر إلى الجنون، وبعد وفاة فتزجرالد اندلعت شهرته من جديد وأصبحت رواياته من أكثر الأعمال الأدبية رواجاً ونجاحاً، كما أخذ النقاد يهتمون به إهتماماً بالغاً واعترف له الجميع بأنه - رغم العالمية المعاصرة، رائد من أعظم رواد الرواية العالمية المعاصرة.
ورواية "غاتسبي العظيم" هي -اعتراف النقاد- أرقى أعمال فترجرتلد وأذكاها وأكثرها رقة وعذوبة، كما أنها تقدم نموذجاً حياً لأسلوبه الجميل الممتع الساحر، وهذه الرواية هي الأولى والوحيدة لفتزجرالد في المكتبة العربية، ويسر دار القدس أن تقدم هذا العمل الفني الكبير فى ترجمة دقيقة أمينة كاملة.
