ألف الإمام العالم أبو زكريا: أحمد بن إبراهيم بن محمد، الشافعي الدمشقي الدمياطي، المعروف بابن النحاس، المتوفى سنة 814هـ شهيداً في منطقة دمياط في مصر كتابه الحافل في الجهاد وأحكامه وفضائله والحث عليه. وسمى كتابه "مشارع الأشواق إلى مصارع العشاق، ومثير الغرام إلى دار السلام.
وقد عاش الإمام الجهاد حالة واقعة في حياته، حيث نشأ في دمشق نشأة جهادية، ومارس الجهاد فيها عملياً، ولما انتقل إلى مصر وأقام في دمياط حوالي عشر سنوات، جاهد فيها جهاداً صادقاً عملياً، وكان يقود أهل دمياط وما حولها في جهاد الصليبيين، وصد غاراتهم، وختم الله حياته بالشهادة، واتخذه شهيداً، حيث استشهد في معركة "الطينة" قرب دمياط سنة 814هـ.
وبهذا جمع الإمام ابن النحاس بين العلم والعمل، وبين الكلام عن الجهاد، والممارسة العملية للجهاد، التي توجت بالاستشهاد. وبهذا كان لكتابه مذاق خاص، وتأثير خاص، ومعلوم أن العالم الكاتب يكتب الله لكتبه القبول، لأنه كتبها مرتين: مرة بمداد العالم، ومرة بدماء الشهيد، وكان ابن النحاس ممن تحقق فيه وفي كتابه هذا الوصف الكريم!
والذي دفع ابن النحاس إلى تأليف كتابه هو ما رآه من وجوب الجهاد على مسلمي زمانه، بسبب الهجوم المغولي والصليبي عليهم، ولكنهم انصرفوا عنه، وتثاقلوا ونكصوا عن ميدانه، فأراد ابن النحاس أن يشحذ هممهم، فألف لهم هذا الكتاب لتحقيق هذه الغاية. وألفه في حوالي عشرة أشهر، قبل استشهاده بسنتين.
وقد أجمع العلماء على أن كتاب ابن النحاس هو أفضل كتاب في الجهاد، وأكثر الكتب المؤلفة في الجهاد جمعاً وتحقيقاً، وأغزرها معلومات وفوائد. وكأن ابن النحاس لاحظ تطويل كتابه، فاختصره في حياته. وسماه "مختصر مشارع الأشواق". وبسبب إعجاب العلماء بكتاب ابن النحاس، وإقبالهم عليه، فقد اختصره بعضهم، ومنهم الشيخ محمود العالم المنزلي المتوفى سنة 1311هـ، الذي سمى مختصره "فكاهة الأذواق في اختصار مشارع الأشواق".
كما واهتم "صلاح عبد الفتاح الخالدي بتحقيق نسخته التي بين يدينا من الكتاب فاعتنى بتهذيبها واختصارها حيث سعي إلى اقتصار بعض القصص والحكايات والرؤى المنامية، وبعض الأحاديث.
