هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا درة عظيمة وجوهرة فريدة، حوى كل ما يختص بالجهاد والمجاهدين من فضائل وأحكام وأخبار، فجاء موسوعة في الجهاد في سبيل الله قل نظيرها. والكتاب في أصله رسالتا ماجستير لكل من الدكتور إدريس محمد علي والدكتور محمد خالد اسطنبولي تقدما بها إلى جامعة أم القرى كلية الشريعة.
وقد قام المحققان "إدريس محمد علي، ومحمد خالد اسطنبولي" بالعناية خاصة بالتراجم في الكتاب فحذف ما تكرر منها في الرسالتين وأحالا في الأخيرة على الأولى حيث اقتضى الأمر لفائدة أو مسألة تتعلق بترجمة الراوي كما اختصر في بعض تراجم الأعلام المشهورين رجاء عدم الإطالة في هوامش الكتاب ما أمكن دون الإخلال بالمقصود من إيراد الترجمة.
ثم كان من اللازم عليها إعادة فهرسة الكتاب ودمج قائمة المراجع وقد ساعد في هذا الباحث عدنان شلاق حيث قام بوضع فهارس منوعة للكتاب.
