الحب الوحيد الذي لا يؤثر فيه الزمن ولا يفترسه النسيان هو : الوطن. كلما مرت سنة على غياب الوطنة يكبر هذا الحب ويتعمق بل يتحول إلى نوع من العبادة. عندما يكتب نبيل خوري مجموعته القصصية الأولى عن الوطن (كفر- عام 1951) لم يكن يحب فلسطين كما يحبها الآن . عندما عاش حرب 1967 في القدس وشاهد ضياع " بقية الوطن" وشعر بأن جزءا جديدا في قلبه قد انسلخ عنه ، كتب رواية. وعندما انطلق العمل الفدائي ليحرر"الوطن" كتب "الرحيل" .. في الكويت. وعندما بدأت المؤامرات لذبح العمل الفدائي، كانت "القناع" وكتبت في باريس. لا شئ يربط بين الروايات الثلاث إلا فلسطين.. وعنصر الزمن .. مروة واحدة أثناء حرب تشرين كاد الزمن يلغي نشرها فلقد اعتقد أن الزمن ألغى مبرر نشرها تجاوزها لكنه فجع من جديد. فكان لابد من النشر .. تأكيدا على أن "لا شئ تغير" .
