يسجل الكتاب مطامح الكرد القبليين والروحيين وسكن المدن والمثقفين الأكراد في إنشاء دولة كوردية، ولكن التآمر السياسي الدولي والنزاع الديني، أعاق قيام قومية كردية منظمة وخاصة "عندما أعلنت روسيا الحرب على تركيا في 2 تشرين الثاني 1914م، بدا للكرد وكأن القدر البعيد قد قذف بهم إلى نزاع وضعهم - ببعض الإستثناءات - في صف الإسلام، وضد الدولة المسيحية الكبيرة في الشمال مع حلفائها الأرمن والآشوريين الذين يعيشون في وسطهم. وعندما وضعت الحرب أوزارها بعد أربع سنوات، كانت جبال كردستان الوسطى بقعاً يباباً وظهر زعماء جدد، ونجمت مشاكل جديدة احتلت مركز الصدارة في تاريخهم ...".
يقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة عشر فصلا تبدأ من مرحلة تأسيس الدولة (جمهورية مهاباد) وتنتهي بسقوطها، مرورا بأهدافها وأهم رجالاتها، وعلاقاتها بغيرها من بلدان الجوار.
