للتفكير مستويان، حيث صنفت أغلب المراجع المتخصصة نوعين من التفكير هما: تفكير من مستوى أدنى أو أساسى يتضمن مهارات منها المعرفة (اكتسابها وتذكرها)، الملاحظة، المقارنة، التصنيف، وتفكير من مستوى أعلى أو مركب ويتضمن خمسة أنواع هى: التفكير الناقد، التفكير الإبداعى، حل المشكلات، إتخاذ القرار، التفكير فوق المعرفى، والمتعلمون بحاجة إلى الإنتقال لممارسة مستويات التفكير المركب وخصوصاً فى أعلى المراحل الأساسية، كما أنهم فى حاجة إلى التفكير فيما يعرفونه وفيما يحتاجون إلى معرفته ويقوٍّمون مدى تقدمهم فى تحقيق أهدافهم، وهم يحتاجون إلى البحث بسبل وطرائق جديدة، كما يحتاجون إلى تنظيم وترتيب تعلمهم، وتفكير المتعلمين فى تفكيرهم يسمى التفكير فوق المعرفى أى وعى المتعلمين بالخطوات والاستراتيجيات المستخدمة فى حل المشكلة، وتمثل الرياضيات مجالاً خصباً لتنمية مهارات التفكير المختلفة، كما أن الرياضيات تساعد فى حل أنواع كثيرة من المشكلات، وتمثل المشكلة (المسألة) الرياضية عنصراً أساسياً فى رياضيات المرحلة الأساسية، ومجالاً هاماً فى ربط الرياضيات بالحياة العملية، وإذا أحسن تدريسها فإنها تعطى دافعية للمتعلم فى الدراسة الجادة للرياضيات، وتكسبه مهارات فى حلها، وهناك مجموعة من الخطوات الإجرائية التى يجب على المعلمين إتباع مراحلها عند وضع المتعلمين فى مواقف حل المشكلة .
وفى ضوء مفهوم التفكير فوق المعرفى ومفهوم المشكلة أصبحت استراتيجيات التفكير فوق المعرفى متطلباً أساسياً وضرورياً لعملية حل المشكلة، كما أصبح مفهوم ما فوق المعرفة أداة هامة لدراسة التفكير وعملياته، واستراتيجيات التفكير فوق المعرفى عبارة عن نمط من التفكير يسمح للمتعلمين باستخدام مهاراتهم وتنميتها، ولهذه الاستراتيجيات إجراءات يقوم بها المتعلمون والتى تستخدم قبل وأثناء وبعد التعلم للتذكر، والفهم والتخطيط والتطبيق والإدارة وحل المشكلات وباقى العمليات المعرفية الأخرى، وبناءً على ذلك تطرق الكتاب الحالى للعديد من الموضوعات منها استراتيجيات التفكير فوق المعرفى، وحل المشكلة الرياضية والتعلم الذاتى وتنمية الاتجاه نحوه، موزعة فى ثلاث فصول.
