إن التفكير نشاط طبيعي، تظهر أهميته من صعوبة الإحاطة بالنتاج المعرفي الكبير والمتسارع وأخذه بكمه وشكله، لذا ينبغي لنا تدريب الفرد على مهاراته وتعليمه الطرائق التي تساعده على التفكير السليم المنتج الذي يفيده ومجتمعه الذي يعيش فيه.
إن أهم سمة تميز التفكير هي أنه يحتاج إلى التدريب والمران والممارسة عليه، وبإمكان المتعلم أن ينمي في نفسه القدرة الإيجابية على التفكير إذا ألزم نفسه بإتباع خطوات التفكير السليم التي يرسمها له من تصدى لتعليمه وحثه على إعتماد التفكير في أنشطته التعليمية المختلفة.
ومن أبرز أنواع التفكير هو التفكير ما وراء المعرفة يتضمن قدرة المتعلم على ممارسة عمليات التفكير العليا التي يلجأ إليها المتعلمون عندما تواجههم مشكلة ما أو يريدون أن يتخذوا أو يصنعوا قراراً معيناً، وأن هذا التفكير يستلزم نوعاً من الحوار الذاتي أي مخاطبة الذات حين البدء بالتخطيط ومتابعة هذا تنفيذ التخطيط والمراقبة والمتابعة المستمرة للتنفيذ حتى يصل المتعلم إلى درجة الإطمئنان لما يقوم به ويعتقد أنه حقق التعلم المطلوب.
ولقد تطورت وكثرت البحوث والدراسات التربوية والنفسية حول التفكير ما وراء المعرفي وأدى الأمر إلى ظهور العديد من الإستراتيجيات التي أخذت أبعاداً تربوية متعددة أخذ الباحثون يؤكدون على ضرورة إستعمالها في تعليم الطلبة لأنها أثبتت جدارتها العلمية وإيجابيتها في تحقيق الأهداف المرسومة.
